Torment

When something traumatizing happens to somebody like almost drowning, the time they are spending trying not to die may feel like it takes forever even though it doesn't last long.  Plus once they are pulled from the water and can finally take those precious deep breaths of air, their body gets over the massive strain it went through and can relax again.  What isn't always able to get over the trauma and relax again is their mind.  When they can re-live the whole thing over and over again their torture continues past the physical experience ending, sometimes for years.  Feeling like they're suffering still but now it's fear and anxiety causing pain.  Training to focus the mind away from the mental suffering is difficult but most needed to achieve contentment inside and out.  Like teaching yourself to take that precious deep breath of air to save yourself from drowning and relax again.  =)
